Biomechanics is the science of how we move This can be used to show general activities like ,how we walk, play a sport, get out of a chair. It can be also used to analyse specific movements , like how we use our hands, what our feet do when we walk etc It can be very useful when you want to see if your patient has shows unusual way of doing something eg through muscle weakness, or unusual technique. The results not only help me as an Osteopath but also helps the sports coach, and of course the patient themselves, to understand the reasons for the injury and how to treat and rehabilitate them.
This is a short video showing a patient running. They had a specific injury which came on gradually and was not getting better. It was clear that there was more than one reason for the injury starting. One of the best ways to see if the way he ran had some bearing on his injury starting , is to video in slow motion. Mobile phones these days are just mini computers and I got him to video himself running. I requested a head on view, a side view and a back view, all in slow motion if possible. Sports injuries can have several origins, this video certainly helped in finding the reasons for it developing in the first place.
